LAURA AMAYRANI AYON ROBLES
CLIENT: THE WASHINGTON POST
Laura Amayrani Ayon Robles, 20, with her father-in-law Jose Antonio Pena Grey, 64, at a family home in the town of Cosala, in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. Laura was home alone when Marine helicopters began circling the family ranch in the Sierra Madre mountains on the morning of October 6, 2015. When she went outside to investigate, they opened fire, bullets landing within arms reach of her. She and four family members, including Jose, walked through the woods for four days to reach safety. The ranch is a few miles from where, the day before, the military attempted and failed to capture Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa cartel.
