EVEN THE ROADS WEPT
A bowl of rice and money-- offerings for a healthy birth-- lie under the bed of Sugia Devi, right, as she labors with her first child in the mud home where she lives with her husband's family in the village of Mounia in the state of Bihar, India. Well over nine months pregnant, Sugia went into false labor several weeks ago. This labor lasted two full nights and involved three midwives and the village doctor. She eventually delivered a baby girl via Caesarian section in a local clinic-- the second she was brought to, as the first did not have the necessary resources.
