BORN IN A TIME OF WAR
Beatrice Nirere, 23-years-old and seven months pregnant bundles up her one-year-old son, Mukisa Fred in front of their tent in the U.N. camp where her husband, a former FDLR rebel fighter, is being held after surrendering in the first wave of a disarmament program. Born in Rwanda, Beatrice fled to Congo at age three during the conflict there, and never went back. "I never lived in one place. I had to move all the time “because of the war." She doesn't know where she will give birth. Ninety miles from the provincial capital city of Goma, 103 ex-combatants, many of whom still keep close ties to their former rebel group, wait along with their families in the camp in Kanyabayonga, North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, July 19, 2014."
