Kunti Devi, center, and her daughter-in-law mourn the death of Kunti's 16-year-old daughter Mamta at their home in the Motibigha village, Bihar, India. Mamta died nine days before of severe eclampsia after delivering a stillborn child. Because she had not had her "gauna"-- or final marriage ceremony-- her parents refused to acknowledge her pregnancy and she received no prenatal care.
