The daughter of clinic doctor Mira Kumari watches through an open doorway into the examination room as the family of Sugia Devi gathers around the table on which she lies, laboring with her first child at the clinic in the village of Mounia in the state of Bihar, India. Sugia's labor lasted two full nights and involved three midwives and the village doctor. She eventually delivered a baby girl via Caesarian section in another local clinic-- the second she was brought to, as this one did not have the necessary resources.
