NIGERIA ABORTION011.JPG
A girl, 16, who preferred not to be named, sits on the bed in a hotel where her best friend was raped a year before by a guy she met on a social networking website, in Lagos, Nigeria, September 3, 2013. She had accompanied the friend to the hotel, where they were expecting a casual meet-up, until the man locked her out of the room. The friend died of complications from a botched abortion resulting from the rape about two months afterwards. In Nigeria, abortion is only officially legal to save the life of the mother. But stigmatization drives the practice deeply underground, making it extremely risky for the majority, who cannot afford to visit a trained doctor.
