BORN IN A TIME OF WAR
First Sergeant Zawadi Bati, 27, a member of the Democratic Republic of Congo's army, the FARDC, stands guard with her two-year-old daughter Dorcas, who follows her to her posts, in the village of Mushake in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, July 31, 2014. Zawadi is seven months pregnant with her second child. She gave birth to her after marching with her unit for several days to a village called Kigulube. Within three of the birth the unit moved again, along with Zawadi and baby Dorcas. "As I was walking I didn’t feel it, I had my mind set up like a soldier, I was just walking with my gun." Zawadi says that the father of her second baby died six months ago after being struck by lightening. He was also a soldier.
